The Duty of Fasting

Believers are called to observe the sacred fast on the twelfth day of July each year. On this day, from the time the previous day ends until the next day begins, no substance other than water may pass the lips. However, those with special circumstances, such as expectant mothers or those who are ill, are permitted to delay the fast. If completing the fast within the same year proves difficult, it is acceptable to resume the fast on the twelfth day of July the following year. During the period of fasting, only plain water may be taken.
